THE GURJARA-PRATIHARAS

The Gurjara-Pratiharas of Kanauj (to the northwest of modern Kanpur) are an important Rajput dynasty that attained imperial dimensions, similar to that of Samudragupta or Harsha. It has been conjectured that originally the Gurjarats were nomads who accompanied the Huns. Although this is not improbable, they mixed with Indian families so rapidly and so thoroughly that this fact is important only with regard to the origin of their sovereignty. The Gurjarats were and still are a nomadic tribe of what is now Rajasthan. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, certain members of this tribe managed to seize power and establish a strong dynasty known by the name of Pratihara (porter), since one of their ancestors had served as a door-keeper during the sacrificial ceremonies performed by one of the Rashtrakutan kings.
